چکیده

A logic is said to be paraconsistent if it does not allow everything to follow from contradictory premises. There are several approaches to paraconsistency. This paper is concerned with several philosophical positions on paraconsistency. In particular, it concerns three ‘schools’ of paraconsistency: Australian, Belgian and Brazilian. The Belgian and Brazilian schools have raised some objections to the dialetheism of the Australian school. I argue that the Australian school of paraconsistency need not be closed down on the basis of the Belgian and Brazilian schools’ objections. In the appendix of the paper, I also argue that the Brazilian school’s view of logic is not coherent. But though logic has come a long way very recently, it has a longer way to go, both in whom it involves and what it investigates. There are, for instance, virtually no black researchers, and exceedingly few women are engaged; and for all the proclaimed rationality of modern humans and their institutions, logic touches comparatively little human practice. Differently, there remain many notions of considerable logical import, some of historical significance, of which we lack decent accounts or, sometimes, a clear appreciation. To the satisfactory elucidation of these, sociative logics can make essential contributions. Sylvan (1989) p. 133.

Inquiry, Refutations and the Inconsistent

In this paper, I discuss the connection between Lakatosian method of proofs and refutations, Hintikkan models of interrogative inquiry and paraconsistency. I bridge these different schools with dialectic, and their underlying reliance on the inconsistent.

Maximal and Premaximal Paraconsistency in the Framework of Three-Valued Semantics

Maximality is a desirable property of paraconsistent logics, motivated by the aspiration to tolerate inconsistencies, but at the same time retain from classical logic as much as possible. In this paper we introduce the strongest possible notion of maximal paraconsistency , and investigate it in the context of logics that are based on deterministic or non-deterministic three-valued matrices. We ...

On Discourses Addressed by Infidel Logicians

We attempt to address here some alleged criticisms against the philosophical import of the so-called Brazilian approach to paraconsistency, especially by providing some demanded epistemic elucidations to the whole enterprise of the logics of formal inconsistency. In the way of elucidating, we substantiate the view that difficulties in reasoning under contradictions in both the Buddhist and the ...

Paraconsistency properties in degree-preserving fuzzy logics

Paraconsistent logics are specially tailored to deal with inconsistency, while fuzzy logics primarily deal with graded truth and vagueness. Aiming to find logics that can handle inconsistency and graded truth at once, in this paper we explore the notion of paraconsistent fuzzy logic. We show that degree-preserving fuzzy logics have paraconsistency features and study them as logics of formal inc...

A Local Approach to Reasoning under Incosistency in Stratified Knowledge Bases

This paper investigates an approach for reasoning under inconsistency in a "local" way, in prioritized knowledge bases. In such bases, the higher the layer, the more certain, the more reliable are the formulas stored in this layer. The proposed approach is based on the notion of (consistent) argument whose strength depends on the layer of the least certain formulas involved in the argument. Eac...
